This is the sixth Fr. James J. O'Brien SJ Memorial Lecture Series, with a theme, "Remembering the Martial Law Years in the Bicol Region," held at the Bro. Richie Fernando, S.J. Hall, Ateneo de Naga University, via Zoom, Facebook live, and YouTube last September 22, 2022.
This coincides with the 50th commemoration anniversary of Martial Law. With historical revisionism on the rise, the event aimed to examine the event of the martial law era in Bicol, highlighting the importance of political memory in nation-building and developing Bicol Identity. The activity was done in a roundtable discussion format. Present on site were the college faculty, political science students, and some members of the AdeN High School Batch of 1966.
The discussions were about the following topics: Militarization and Student Activism; Impact on Education and Culture; Socio-Economic Impact of Martial Law; Lessons Learned, and What Can Be Done.
The panelists for this activity were Atty. Luis Ruben General, a practicing lawyer, faculty of the Ateneo and UNC College of Law, a writer, and an alumnus of Aden HS batch 1972. Marne Kilates, an award-winning poet, freelance writer, editor, and translator, he has also won the Palanca Memorial Awards, National Book Awards, and SEA Write Award. Dr. Rebecca Torres, the executive assistant to the president and graduate school faculty of Ateneo de Naga University. Dr. Ma. Filipinas Bana, Chairperson of the Department of Media Studies. And lastly, Leo Paulo Imperial, Chairperson of the Social Sciences Department and the current president of the Caceres Heritage Movement, Inc. Together with Dr. Federico Jose Lagdameo, Chairperson of University Research Council and Dr. Digna Paner-Alba, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences as the moderators for the said roundtable discussion.
